HEAR ME OUT REPORT

Inquiry Into Implementation Progress for Banksia Hill’s Model of Care Instruction.

The ‘Hear Me Out’ Inquiry Report features the voices and perspectives of 43 children and young people detained at Banksia Hill and Unit 18, along with staff and service providers.

It also includes 16 findings and recommendations, which are primarily based upon the data and information provided to the Inquiry by the Department of Justice.

It is clear that young people in our justice system often have complex and profound needs. By conducting this inquiry our aim was to see if the support provided met the needs of young people in detention and gave them, plus staff and service providers, a chance to share their views.

Unfortunately, the focus is frequently on their behaviours rather than the underlying issues driving these.

But ‘Hear Me Out’ is about more than just a report – it’s about listening to young people. Their voices have too often been ignored.

The ‘Hear Me Out’ report is a call to action, urging us all to respect children and young people’s right to be heard and ensure they receive the care and support they need.

I encourage you to read the report, understand the realities of our youth justice system and consider the findings and recommendations presented.

Commissioner of Children and Young People (WA)
