Young lens on life in WA: Snapshot WA winners revealed
Western Australia's young photographers have captured powerful moments and stories through the lens, with the winners of the Snapshot WA competition revealed today.
Commissioner for Children and Young People Dr Jacqueline McGowan-Jones launched the competition during Youth Week WA 2026 celebrations in April.
Snapshot WA was open to young people aged 8 to 17 years living in Western Australia. The competition provided an accessible way for participants to submit original photographs online and share what matters most to them, inviting young people to reflect on their everyday experiences, their communities, and the places that give them a sense of belonging. It aligned with this year's Youth Week WA theme 'Strength in Our Stories'.
Participants submitted photos under the following six themes: My Day / My Life; Places I Belong; What Matters to Me; My World; Things That Make Me Happy; and Home.
Of the 293 amazing entries, the Commissioner is proud to announce first-place winner Jack Zhou, followed by Nelaiyah Macauley in second place, and Roo-Ann Edwards in third place.
A $100 voucher is awarded to first place, $75 for second, and $50 for third.
The People's Choice voting is now open through our website until late July, with the winning photographer to receive a $25 voucher.
Quotes attributable to Dr Jacqueline McGowan-Jones, Commissioner for Children and Young People WA
"The entries we received showed the creativity and diversity of young Western Australians' lives and perspectives. Photography gave participants a way to communicate something meaningful about their experiences, and what they chose to share tells us a great deal about what matters to them.
"The entries reflected the strong connection many young people have to their communities, families and the things that bring them joy.
"I am so proud of all the children and young people who shared their world through Snapshot WA. It takes confidence and creativity to put your work forward, and every participant should be proud of what they contributed.
"When young people are given a genuine platform and the freedom to use it in their own way, they consistently show us the richness of their experiences and perspectives. That is exactly why we create opportunities like Snapshot WA."
