A Community Hub for Children and Young People
Yesterday afternoon I met with the staff of the Cockburn Youth Centre located at 25 Wentworth Parade, Success.
The beautiful, child-friendly facility is equipped to provide a whole range of programs for local children and young people aged 10-24. These include recreational games and sports, along with art and music, and skills building like cooking and digital media.
The staff also provide case work and group programs to support young people with any issues or problems they may be facing.
In order for children and young people to truly thrive, they need opportunities to be creative, socialise and pursue their passions. By catering to such a diverse spread of interests and needs, the Cockburn Youth Centre is a brilliant example of how that can be achieved at a local level.
I was particularly impressed by the Centre’s Youth Advisory Collective, which provides an avenue for the young people in the City of Cockburn to connect directly with their Council.
The Centre also serves as home base for the Cockburn Mobile Youth Service. This innovative outreach initiative takes recreational sports and art activities on the road. The Service’s Bus visits various local parks over the week and sets up fun activities for children to participate in.
I commend the City of Cockburn for engaging with their young people in such an active and positive manner.
